The river is the last of the community cards dealt in a game, both in poker tournaments and cash games. It's also known as fifth street, as it's the fifth and final of the five community cards. Most importantly, the river often makes or breaks a hand and decides the outcome of a showdown.

In Hold'em, the river card is the fifth community card dealt face up in the centre of the table. In Stud, the river card is a hole card dealt individually to every remaining player.

The river offers the least complicated strategy of any betting street. With no further cards to come, hand values are fixed and future board coverage is no longer a consideration. Bets can be straightforwardly classified as either value, seeking calls from worse hands, or bluffs, seeking folds from better.

Dealing the river is identical as dealing the turn with one card being burned facedown followed by a single card face-up. This is the final street and no more cards will be dealt in this hand. The final betting round is identical to the Texas Hold'em round on the turn.
