Massanutten Planning New Hotel, Indoor Waterpark (2024)

Massanutten Report will be expanding its waterpark and creating an onsite hotel for guests.

This will increase the number of guests that can use the waterpark. In April 2024 the additions will begin, with minimal disruption to guests at the existing WaterPark.

"A transformative Master Plan is underway, which will take our current offerings to the next level and redefine the guest experience at Massanutten Resort,” remarked Steve Krohn, president and chief operating officer of the Resorts Companies in a Massanutten Resort news release. "Our commitment to providing unparalleled hospitality experiences remains unwavering, and this expansion underscores our dedication to innovation and guest satisfaction."

The discussion about building a hotel started in 2022 and then the waterpark expansion conversation started in the beginning of 2023, according to Kelly Long, director of hospitality administration at Massanutten Resort.

Dana Staniunas, director of recreation at Massanutten Resort, said it would be nice for guest to leave the WaterPark and go straight to their rooms, rather than get into their vehicles and drive back to their condo in wet clothes. So, the discussion started with creating a hotel first. Then it was noted that during peak season the WaterPark is very busy, so discussion began on how to increase capacity.

The Indoor WaterPark will expand in two areas: a 6,000-square-foot expansion will connect the new hotel and atrium to the current Indoor WaterPark facilities, states the news release. On the other side of the current Indoor WaterPark will be a 22,000-square-foot expansion.

"All in all, ... we're adding 28,000 square feet to the 44,000 square feet that we already have,” Staniunas said.

The additions should add a 50 to 60 percent increase in capacity, according to Long.

“Adding that additional event space really provides an opportunity for it to be a gathering place,” Long said.

There will be a three-lane, headfirst mat racing slide and a family raft ride with one-of-a-kind light, sound and design features replicating a Cosmic Slide experience. According to Massanutten Resort there will also be an enhanced kiddie area with pools and slides and a large wave pool. The addition will also feature an adult pool, cabanas, a dining terrace with increased food and beverage options and a bar.

The WaterPark addition will be attached to a new 144-room hotel, according to the news release. The hotel will feature a 6,500-square-foot atrium connected to the WaterPark for seamless guest access, featuring cascading waterfalls, glass walls with views into the Indoor WaterPark, easy control technology and handicap accessible paths.

Staniunas said the resort is always looking to enhance experiences. This expansion will allow guests to come and stay in one location, if they choose, and have all their needs met, food, activities and accommodations.

“On top of that, if you want to get out and experience the whole resort, we have that to offer as well,” Staniunas said.

Staniunas said that construction should start in early spring 2024 with a planned completion date of early winter of 2026. Logistically there are a few things that need to be done. The hotel will be situated where the current parking lot is. So, another parking lot needs to be put in place for guests before constructing the hotel.

"Announcing phase one of our Master Plan is a moment of excitement and pride for all in the Massanutten community,” said Dice Hammer, chairman and chief executive officer of The Resorts Companies in the news release. “Our team puts a relentless focus on innovation, and we all share a deep commitment to our guests, owners and community. We’re excited for what the next few years of significant growth will hold.”

There should be no impact on guest that want attend the WaterPark until then, according to Staniunas. If there are some incremental shutdowns, it will be short periods of time, most likely when those portions of the resort are not open.

"We are excited for Massanutten Resort and our community as we all embark on this exciting expansion project," stated Joel Hensley, District 5 supervisor for the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors in the news release. "With the involvement of local contractors, Harmon Construction and Mather Architects, this development not only enhances our region's tourism appeal but also exemplifies our commitment to fostering economic growth and opportunity within our community."
