Jello Shots are pretty easy to make and follow a simple recipe. This is the basic recipe anyone can follow:

● 1 small box of Flavored Gelatin (there are others with unflavored Gelatin, but this is the basics)
● 1 cup boiling water
● 1 cup of: vodka/rum/tequila/whiskey/schnapps/liqueurs

The 1 cup of some sort of spirits is the key. The different flavor combinations of alcoholic beverages combined with the flavored gelatin are what make the tasty jello shot varieties.

Hubby and I attended a party last weekend at my brother’s house. I volunteered to bring gelatin shots. I made 6 different varieties! Here is the tower with some of the gelatin shots (there were 80 shots in all):

Over the next few weeks, I will be posting all the recipes that made up that tower!

Some of the recipes were better received than others. This Margarita Jello Shot recipe was a major hit!! It tastes just like a Margarita, even without the salt. Salting wasn’t really possible with the plastic souffle cups that we used for transportation.

Last Saturday was EXTREMELY hot here… like 95°. We kept the jello shots on ice, but after the ice melted, they did un-gel a bit. We hurried a bunch to the refrigerator, and they reset just fine.

I took 4 of the Margarita shots home, and they lasted for a number of days in the refrigerator.

Tips and tricks for making these Margarita Jello shots:

● It was pointed out to me these Jello shots use 2¼ cups of liquid and not the normal 2 cups, which leads to increased setting time. You can absolutely decrease the water to 5/8ths of a cup to get you to 2 cups of liquid. They will be more “rubbery” like a traditional jello shot and set up faster.

● You may use “Margarita salt” or any coarse salt to the rim of each shot glass.

● You can try to salt the souffle cup rims, but if you are capping them to transport or store, most of the salt will be knocked off by the lid.

● If you like, you can all a small piece of lime or a key lime wedge to the shot before serving.

● The souffle cups (plastic cups) are 2oz, and a shot glass is 1oz, 1.5oz, or 2oz normally, so you may get a different number of servings depending on the vessel you use to set the gelatin.

● Instead of Cointreau, you can use Triple Sec or Grand Marnier, or whatever orange liqueur you like. It will slightly change the taste of these jello shots, but personal preference is the key to all recipes, including these fun margarita jello shots!

● When stacking these in the refrigerator I set the plastic cups on a baking sheet or in a 13×9 pan so I can move them easily.

● A box of lime jello was used to make this recipe. You can use any brand of lime gelatin.
