Today we’re taking you back to basics with our Instant Pot Black Beans. These pressure cooker black beans are fit for any recipe that calls for canned black beans or cooked black beans. It’s easy to use your instant pot or pressure cooker to make black beans not only to have black beans whenever you need them, but it also makes it even more affordable than buying canned.

To make this recipe you’ll need a pressure cooker, like an instant pot. What is a pressure cooker? Pressure cookers cook food in an airtight pot where the food is cooked quickly with steam under high pressure.

How much water do you use for 1 cup of black beans?

We use 4 cups of water to 1lb of dry black beans. We also add in a little salt andyou may also add any spices or herbs, like in our Mexican Black Beans.

Do you have to soak beans before putting into the Instant Pot?

Using presoaked beans is optional and there’s no need to soak the black beans prior to cooking with this recipe. That being said, if you suffer from gas or stomach pains after eating black beans soaking will help remove some of the oligosaccharides that cause flatulence.

How to cook black beans in the Instant Pot

  • Before you can cook dried beans, remove any dirt or debris from the beans. Thoroughly rinse them under cold running water and then add dry black beans to the instant pot.
  • Pour in the water and set valve to Sealing, then select Pressure Cook setting to High for 25 minutes.
  • Allow the instant pot to come to pressurize (time will depend on your altitude, mine took 12 minutes), once it’s pressurized cooking time will begin to count down. Once the 25 minutes are up, and the machine beeps, allow it to Release Naturally for 15 minutes. DO NOT QUICK RELEASE.
  • Once this time is up, release any remaining pressure in the pot by setting the valve to Venting.
  • Carefully open the pot turning away from your face. You can use a wooden spoon instead of your hand as well.
  • Most of the water will have been absorbed by the beans. At this time you can add salt or any seasonings you would like.
  • Serve and enjoy the black beans as desired.

How long to cook black beans in the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

It takes about 25 minutes to cook the beans, but there’s also the 15 minute natural release time and then the 12-15 minute time you wait for it to pressurize.
