Traditional langos, also known as Hungarian fried bread is a round-shaped deep-fried dough, topped with sour cream and cheese. Our langos recipe is calibrated to help you make a delicious authentic Hungarian langos at home. We learnt to make this recipe from my mother in law who is a native Hungarian.

Langos Origins

The name comes from láng which translates to flame in Hungarian. Despite its name, a modern Hungarian langos is not cooked on an open fire but it's deep-fried in oil or fat. It is believed that langos derives from an Italian flatbread panis focacius which was baked in the ashes of a fireplace.

Currently, langos is sold as street food throughout Hungary. You will find it especially during Christmas markets and during fairs and celebrations. Some permanent stalls selling langos can be found in the capital and also at Sunday craft markets. Langos is an affordable and simple food which every Hungarian loves. It quickly became a popular recipe with tourists too.

We now know how to make traditional langos which you can make at home too when you miss your time in Hungary. The langos became so popular that you can now find it at different festivals in Austria, Germany and in part of Transylvania too.

The Langos dough

The dough for lángos is made of water, yeast and a little salt. The ratios are very much the same as for pizza dough, the only difference being that you deep-fried the langos and not bake it like a pizza. The dough can be sticky but the result is almost always a lovely fluffy Hungarian fried bread.

Our langos recipe is made with dry yeast. It's much easier to make and the results are always exceptional.

As a different version of a langos recipe, you can add potato or yoghurt to the recipe, making it a traditional Hungarian krumplis langos. This is not to be confused with traditional simple langos in this article.

Langos toppings

The langos should be eaten fresh and warm, topped with sour cream and grated cheese. Different toppings include meats, sausages, butter, garlic and vegetables. Langos toppings have been adapted throughout the time to become more modern and appealing to locals and foreigners.

Traditional Hungarian langos toppings are sour cream and grated cheese. We used vega sour cream from Dr. Oetker and Simply V grated cheese which is vegan and melts just like the real thing.

Description

Our langos recipe is for authentic and traditional Hungarian fried bread. We learnt it from my Hungarian mother in law who knows how to make langos at home. It's easy to make and the results are fantastic. You can use any toppings you want but we will show you how to make it vegan.

Ingredients

(USA /Metric)

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 packet yeast
  • 1.20 cups water
  • 1 tsp caster sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

    1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water. Sprinkle the instant yeast over the water and set aside for 10-15 minutes until it becomes frothy.
    2. In a standing mixer add the flour and the salt. Make a well in the middle and add the yeasty water. Knead using the hook attachment for about 5-10 minutes. You can also use your hands for this, but note that it will require some serious kneading for at least 15 minutes. The dough will be fairly sticky.
    3. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured bowl and cover with a damp towel. Let it rise for 45 minutes until doubled in size.
    4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knock back the air from the dough. The dough will be quite sticky so feel free to add more flour as needed in order to be able to work the dough.
    5. Divide the dough into 8 equal parts. Using your hands stretch the dough to create a round or oval-shaped langos.
    6. Deep fry each langos for a couple of minutes on each side or until beautifully golden.
    7. Top up with vegan sour cream, vegan cheese and chives. You can use any toppings you like, including olives, garlic etc
