What Is Lightweight Cat Litter?
Lightweight cat litter, as the name suggests, is designed to be lighter in weight and easier to handle than traditional clay litters. Clay litter is extremely dense, which means a relatively small amount can weigh a lot, even if it only lasts you for one or two litter box refills. Some “lightweight” clay litters are combined with more porous minerals (e.g. perlite, diatomaceous earth) to reduce the density and make it easier to transport and handle. In recent decades, alternative litter materials have gained popularity and all of them are lighter weight than clay. This includes crystal litters made from silica gel, as well as natural litters made from plant-based materials like wood, soy, corn, coconut husk, and the list goes on.

Types of Lightweight Cat Litter
Lightweight Clay Litter
Lightweight clay litters combine traditional clay like Fuller’s Earth and bentonite with lighter weight materials like perlite and diatomaceous earth. These litters have similar absorbing and clumping properties as regular clay litter, but can be less than half the weight. Unfortunately, the tradeoff is that lightweight clay litters can be dustier and more prone to tracking. The dust in particular is an issue because it contains crystalline silica, a known carcinogen.
We did not include any lightweight clay litters on this list for a two main reasons:
- The risk of carcinogenic silica dust, which is harmful to both cats and humans.
- The environmental damage caused by clay strip mining.
However, many cat parents love lightweight clay cat litter for its easy portability and affordable price. If it meets your requirements and the needs of your cat, that’s what matters. The best litter is the one your cat will use!
Crystal/Silica Gel Litter
Crystal cat litter (a.k.a. silica cat litter) is a non-clumping litter variety made from silica gel particles. Silica gel has a naturally porous structure, which makes crystal litter very lightweight, long-lasting, and absorbent. The crystals draw in moisture, lock in odor particles, and allow excess water to evaporate. Like tofu litter, a small bag of crystal litter can last a month or more depending on your cat’s litter box habits. Unfortunately, crystal litter is also derived from mined minerals, so it has a negative environmental impact.
